Shrewsberry, New Jersey. Oil on canvas, 12” x 20”

SOLD

The landscape paintings posted “Shrewsberry River, New Jersey.” is a study of the master’s that got me inspired to start doing landscape and plein air painting. 12" x 20" about the same size as the painting he did, 1859.

I believe he was way ahead of his time, before the civil war, the simplicity of his work simple shapes. Shrewsbury River is near Atlantic Highlands and the Gateway National Recreational Area of New Jersey.

“Kensett is a person whose work I’ve loved for a very long time. Kensett’s differ from the other Hudson River School painters because they are radically simple. And what you have in this painting is this wonderful sense of light; emanating light coming up, particularly from the horizon line. Very few details on it: a couple of birds, a couple boats, not much else. And the water is painted so that it’s frozen forever” said Abstract artist Sean Scully regarding Coast Scene with Figures (Beverly Shore), 1869, a work similar in composition at the Wadsworth Atheneum.

North Fork Powerhouse. Oil on canvas, 22” x 28”

I was thrilled to be able to participate in the art jams events, the plein air trips, to the various hydroelectric power houses and paper mills in Clackamas County. Organized be the Willamette Falls Foundation, The Estacada Area Arts Commission, and Portland General Electric. For six or seven years every spring, this was an experience of personal significance to me, a turning point perhaps, as it put me in an industrial environment in close contact with an environment that is still in use, closed, or abandoned, enabling me to document buildings and structures that are often unrecognized and forgotten. These art jams were a lot of fun. Charles Sheeler, Edward Hopper, and Charles Demuth were painting just these kinds of subjects during the Works Projects Administration (WPA) years in the 1930s, but many artists today do not have the opportunity or permission to work at industrial sites.

Cuddle. Oil on wood bed headboard.

Christopher B. Mooney has painted large scale representational oil paintings for over 40 years. He has made a name for himself as a painter of industrial buildings, most notably bridges. After spending many years as a distant observer of man-made objects he is now drawn to depicting the human form from an intimate point of view. Mooney’s portraits range from faces, to full figures, to couples in tender moments. Although industrial steel bridges and the playful embrace of a lover may seem on the surface two disparate topics, they are both at their core about connection. One being the affinity between people and the other the linking of land masses and their communities. SOLD

Cuddle II. Oil on wood bed headboard.

In these uncertain times, we could all benefit from a good cuddle. The current economic downturn threatens the security of families, increases feelings of fear and mistrust and erodes our sense of community.
